The Old Oak is the last pub in this small mining community in the North of England. It used to be a lively location for local gatherings but due to years of economic hardship the pub is rundown and the community is suffering. When a group of Syrian refugees arrives in the Northern town, tensions begin to rise. But the unlikely friendship between pub landlord TJ Ballantyne and Yara, a newly-arrived refugee photographer offers hope in desperate times. Can their desire to understand each other and reach across the divide inspire the town to do the same?
The Old Oak is a British drama movie directed by esteemed filmmaker Ken Loach. Loach is known for movies such as Kes, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, and I, Daniel Blake. He has won the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival twice alongside a host of other international awards. The Old Oak is written by long-time Ken Loack collaborator Paul Laverty. Award-winning composer George Fenton handles the music for the movie.
The Old Oak stars Dave Turner as TJ Ballantyne and Ebla Mari as Yara. Claire Rodgerson plays Laura, Trevor Fox stars as Charlie, and Chris McGlade plays Vic. The cast also includes Col Tait, Jordan Louis, Chrissie Robinson, Chris Gotts, Jen Patterson, Arthur Oxley, Joe Armstrong, Andy Dawson, Maxie Peters, Debbie Honeywood, and Neil Leiper. The Old Oak was released in theaters on April 5, 2024.
