What to know

Russell Crowe stars as the real-life Father Gabriele, chief exorcist for the Vatican

The Pope’s Exorcist is a  supernatural thriller directed by Julius Avery for Sony Pictures Releasing. It is based on the memoirs of Father Gabriele Amorth called An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories. He served as the actual chief exorcist for the Vatican performing thousands of exorcisms throughout his life. Avery has previously directed 2018’s Overlord and 2022’s Samaritan. The screenplay is written by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos whose previous writing credits include The Book Thief and The Unholy respectively. Ángel Gómez  was initially set to direct the movie, however a new director and screenwriter were later brought in. They ultimately retained much of the original work created by the previous team.

The film features Hollywood veteran Russell Crowe playing the lead role of the Catholic priest while popular Italian actor Franco Nero portrays the Pope. Alex Essoe and Daniel Zovatto also star in The Pope’s Exorcist along with Laurel Marsden, Cornell S. John, and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney rounding out the cast.
