American Born Chinese (2023)

Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh stars in Disney+ adaptation of 2006 graphic novel 

American Born Chinese is an action-comedy fantasy TV series created by Kelvin Yu for Disney+. It is based on Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel of the same name. Yu has had an incredibly impressive writing career, specifically as a writer on the massively successful animated series Bob’s Burgers where he also serves as executive producer. He won an Annie Award in 2016 for an episode he co-wrote with Steven Davis called “The Hauntening.” He co-wrote episodes of American Born Chinese with his brother, Charles Yu. 

Destin Daniel Cretton is the show’s director and executive producer while revered actress Lucy Liu guest directs. Asian-American designers Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim are handling the series’ costume design alongside Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ assistant costume designer, Joy Cretton.

The award-winning Michelle Yeoh stars in the series as the mythical Chinese Goddess, Guanyin. She reunites with her Everything, Everywhere All At Once family as Stephanie Hsu portrays another Goddess named Shiji Niangniang and fellow Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan portrays Freddy Wong. Ben Wang stars as the show’s lead, Jin Wang, while Jim Liu portrays Wei-Chen, the new student whose arrival sets off the events of the story. A number of other famous characters from Chinese mythology are featured in the series as well including Hong Huifang as the Nine-tailed fox and Poppy Liu as Princess Iron Fan. Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu and Sydney Taylor round out the cast.
