The Crowded Room is an Apple TV+ psychological thriller miniseries from Akiva Goldsman. The series draws its inspiration from Daniel Keyes' nonfiction novel "The Minds of Billy Milligan", published in 1981. The novel explores the remarkable case of Milligan, an individual who made history as the first person in the United States to be acquitted of a major crime by asserting dissociative identity disorder as a defense. While Tom Holland portrays the character of Danny Sullivan in the series, it is loosely based on the experiences and journey of Milligan.
Akiva Goldsman has gained recognition for his notable screenwriting contributions in films like Cinderella Man and The Da Vinci Code. He achieved an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on A Beautiful Mind in 2001. He is also heavily involved in expanding the Star Trek universe on Paramount+. In The Crowded Room, Goldsman wrote the first four episodes and collaborated with other talented screenwriters for the remaining six. Kornél Mundruczó serves as the director for multiple episodes including the pilot, while the miniseries also boasts the talents of esteemed directors Mona Fastvold, Brady Corbet and Alan Taylor.
Tom Holland takes on the lead role of Danny Sullivan in the series, while Zachary Golinger portrays his younger self. Holland is widely recognized for his portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Goldsman expressed that Holland was his first choice and the only actor he approached for the role of Danny. Amanda Seyfried stars as Rya Goodwin, a determined clinical psychologist seeking to uncover the truth behind the event. Emmy Rossum portrays Candy Sullivan, Danny's mother.
The talented ensemble also includes Sasha Lane as Ariana, Danny's closest friend who shares in their quest for retribution. Christopher Abbott portrays Stan, a war veteran and Danny's lawyer dealing with his own traumatic experiences. Emma Laird portrays Isabel, a high school friend who recognizes Danny's potential. The cast further features Will Chase as Marlin Reid, Jason Isaacs as Jack Lamb, Lior Raz as Yitzhak, Henry Eikenberry as Doug, Henry Zaga as Philip, Thomas Sadoski as Matty Dunne, Laila Robins as Susie, Sam Vartholomeos as Mike and newcomer Levon Hawke as Jonny.
