Netflix has dropped the first teaser trailer for the long-awaited sequel to 2000’s stop motion comedy hit Chicken Run. The sequel, called Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, is set to debut on Netflix on December 15, 2023.
The Chicken Run 2 plot takes up soon after the end of Chicken Run. Ginger, Rocky, and the rest have finally settled into a new life in a peaceful island-based sanctuary after escaping the Tweedys’ farm. Ginger and Rocky have a daughter, Molly, and all seems to be going well until a new danger from the mainland upsets their peace. Ginger and the others must rally once more to infiltrate the enemy’s territory and take them down from the inside.
The New and Returning Cast Members Voice the Gang of Rebellious Chickens
Dawn of the Nugget once more brings an all-star cast to voice the flightless fowls, in addition to some of the original crew. Thandiwe Newton takes over from Julia Sawalha to voice the mastermind chicken Ginger, and Zachary Levi trades places with Mel Gibson to voice Ginger’s husband, Rocky Rhodes.
Returning cast members include Jane Horrocks as the good-natured Babs, Imelda Staunton as the skeptical Bunty, Lynn Ferguson as Ginger’s assistant Mac, and Miranda Richardson as the evil Mrs Tweedy.
Bella Ramsey (recently seen in the acclaimed series The Last of Us) joins the chicken clan as the voice of Ginger and Rocky’s daughter, Molly. Meanwhile, comedian Romesh Ranganathan replaces Timothy Spall as Nick the rat, and Daniel Mays takes over from Phil Daniels as Nick’s partner, Fletcher. David Bradley replaces Benjamin Whitrow as the aged rooster Fowler. Meanwhile, Dawn of the Nugget also introduces several new characters, including a chicken named Frizzle (Josie Sedgwick-Davies), businessman Reginald Smith (Peter Serafinowicz), and Dr Fry (Nick Mohammed).
Who is making Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget?
After the rousing success of the first Chicken Run in 2000, fans were clamouring for more feather covered action. However, the Chicken Run sequel was only announced to be in the works in 2018, with the production companies behind the original, Aardman Animations, Pathé, and StudioCanal backing the new project.
Original film writers Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell return to craft the screenplay for the sequel. They adapted the script for the original film from a story written by Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park and Aardman co-founder Peter Lord — both of whom return for Dawn of the Nugget as executive producers.
Additionally, renowned composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who composed the original’s music alongside John Powell, writes the music for the sequel.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will premiere on Netflix on December 15, 2023.
