Synopsis
Jin Wang is a regular teen thrust into an ancient conflict
Jin wants to find a sense of belonging outside of the family home and fit in at high school. But problems begin to emerge as Jin and his family move from Chinatown in San Francisco to a quiet green suburb. Feeling alone in his new environment, Jin struggles with his identity. When he meets a new foreign exchange student, he suddenly tumbles into a supernatural drama. Entangled in a war between the Gods of Chinese mythology, Jin begins to realize that he isn’t like most teenagers at all. He’s American-born Chinese and that can mean so much more than he first realised.

American Born Chinese Season 1 is an upcoming action fantasy television show. The show is based on the graphic novel of the same name written by Gene Luen Yang. American Born Chinese is a 20th Television production distributed by Disney+. Destin Daniel Cretton is the series director and executive producer. Cretton is joined by guest directors Peng Zhang and Lucy Liu. The series marks Cretton’s second collaboration with Disney after directing the Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. American Born Chinese is written by Charles and Kelvin Yu. Asian-American fashion designers Prabal Gurung and Philip Lim join the production as costume designers.
Season 1 of American Born Chinese is led by Ben Wang playing bored high-schooler Jin Wang and Jim Liu who plays exchange student Wei-Chen. The pair are joined by a host of characters from Chinese mythology including Guanyin played by Michelle Yeoh and Shiji Niangniang played by Stephanie Hsu. Chinese folklore legends Princess Iron Fan and Sun Wokung are both featured in Season 1 portrayed by Poppu Liu and Daniel Wu respectively. American Born Chinese Season 1 was released on May 24th, 2023 on Disney+.
