Synopsis
Barbie and Ken in the human world – what could go wrong?
After being banished from Barbie Land, Barbie embarks on a journey to the human world. The new society is both fascinating and challenging for her, as she must learn to navigate unfamiliar customs, norms, and language. As Barbie struggles with adapting to her new surroundings, Ken seems to be having no issues adjusting to the strange human world standards.

Greta Gerwig directs Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in live-action adaptation of the iconic Mattel dolls
Barbie is a romantic comedy co-written and directed by Greta Gerwig for Warner Bros. Pictures. Marriage Story director, Noah Baumbach, is the other co-writer of the project. The film is inspired by the immensely popular fashion dolls created by Ruth Handler for Mattel. It marks the debut of a live-action version of the beloved Barbie character following a series of computer-animated films that were released straight to video or streaming platforms. Margot Robbie serves as the lead and executive producer of the film while Tom Ackerley, Robbie Brenner, David Heyman, Ynon Kreiz and Josey McNamara are all producers.
Gerwig and her real-life partner Baumbach have collaborated on a number of projects including Greenberg, Frances Ha, Mistress America and White Noise. Barbie marks Gerwig’s third solo-directed title after receiving immense acclaim following her previous works with 2017’s Lady Bird and Little Women in 2019. Both films earned Academy Award nominations including Best Director for Lady Bird and Best Adapted Screenplay for Little Women. She previously co-directed Nights and Weekends in 2008 with Joe Swanberg.
Margot Robbie stars as the titular character and leads an all-star cast including Ryan Gosling portraying Barbie’s fateful partner, Ken. The film contains different variations of Barbie and Ken. Issa Rae portrays President Barbie, Alexandra Shipp as Writer Barbie, Emma Mackey as Physicist Barbie, Ana Cruz Kayne as Judge Barbie, Ritu Arya as Journalist Barbie, Nicola Coughlan as Diplomat Barbie, Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, Kate McKinnon as Gymnast Barbie, Hari Nef as Doctor Barbie and Sharon Rooney as Lawyer Barbie. The varying Ken dolls include Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa and Scott Evans. Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, Emerald Fennell, Michael Cera, Jamie Demetriou and Connor Swindells round out the cast along with America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Rhea Perlman, John Cena, and Marisa Abela.
