What to know

Joaquin Phoenix reunites with Ridley Scott on epic focused on Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon is an epic historical biopic directed by Ridley Scott for Sony Pictures Releasing and Apple TV+. It is written by David Scarpa who previously worked with Scott on All the Money in the World. Scott is a highly respected filmmaker, having crafted numerous critically acclaimed films including Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and The Martian, just to name a few. He received the Academy Award for Best Picture for Gladiator which also starred Napoleon lead, Joaquin Phoenix. Both Scott and Phoenix produce the film alongside Kevin J. Walsh and Mark Huffam. Dariusz Wolski handles cinematography duties on Napoleon after having worked with Scott on The Counselor, Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Martian. Napoleon received a theatrical release in November 2023 and will stream on Apple TV+ following its theatrical run.

Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix leads the film as historical figure Napoleon Bonaparte. Phoenix received the coveted Best Actor award in 2020 for Joker. He also received a nomination for the Best Supporting Oscar in 2001 for the aforementioned Scott collaboration, Gladiator.

The talented ensemble cast includes Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, Napoleon's wife and empress consort, and Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras, a prominent political figure during the French Revolution. Ben Miles stars as Napoleon's close advisor Caulaincourt while Ludivine Sagnier plays Thérésa Cabarrus/Madame Tallien, a socialite and aristocratic woman of the period. Matthew Needham portrays Lucien Bonaparte and Youssef Kerkour is Marshal Davout, one of Napoleon's most accomplished military leaders. Phil Cornwell portrays Sanson AKA The Bourreau, the executioner responsible for the guillotine execution of the French king.

Édouard Philipponnat, Ian McNeice, Rupert Everett, Paul Rhys, Catherine Walker, Gavin Spokes, John Hollingworth, Mark Bonnar, Anna Mawn, Davide Tucci, Sam Crane, Scott Handy and Philip Marsden round out the rest of the cast.
