10 Movies to Watch If You Liked Kingdom Of The Planet of The Apes (And Where To Stream Them)

Published on

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues the successful reboot movies of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Set three hundred years after the events of War of the Planet of the Apes, the 2024 sci-fi action thriller revolves around a chimpanzee and a young woman as they decide the future for humans and apes.

If you enjoyed this immersive blend of militaristic action and motion-capture CGI, we offer you ten more movies to watch after Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the platforms where you can stream them.

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

A direct precursor to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, this ambitious action epic concludes the arc of Andy Serkis’s ape leader Caesar. A rewatch is due following the franchise’s latest release (which covers the whereabouts of Caesar’s descendants).

The Maze Runner (2014)

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball first proved his mastery over the sci-fi thriller genre with his directorial debut. Starring Dylan O’Brien in the titular role, the post-apocalyptic adaptation revolves around a band of captive teenagers as they fight off mechanical creatures and struggle to escape the maze they’re trapped in.

Congo (1995)

When it comes to movies on super-intelligent apes, Congo is an underrated classic. Based on a novel by Jurassic Park writer Michael Crichton, Congo is a survival horror pitting scientists and CIA agents against rogue killer apes in the forest.

King Kong (2005)

No list of ape movies is complete without a mention of King Kong. While the 1931 is an undisputed classic, Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake will appeal to newer audiences. Caesar actor Andy Serkis also delivers a moving motion-capture performance as the gigantic gorilla who loyally protects a human woman.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

James Cameron’s spectacular sequel to Avatar is comparable to Kingdom of Planet of the Apes in terms of its ambitious world-building and hyper-realistic motion-capture animation.

I, Robot (2004)

The philosophical debates on ape-human coexistence in Kingdom of Planet of the Apes are strangely reminiscent of similar themes in robot-themed movies. The criminally underrated Will Smith-starrer I, Robot is one such example that examines the morals of humans using robots in a tech-driven future.

Abigail (2024)

Kevin Durand is one of the stand-out performers of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, playing the villainous ape tyrant Proximus Caesar. If you want to watch more of the actor’s work, look no further than his recent release Abigail. The dark horror comedy features a 12-year-old ballerina vampire who fights off her kidnappers (Durand being one of them).

Dune (2021)

Much like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Dune brilliantly sets up a world that is so similar to humanity and yet so fantastical on its own. The rivalries between the Harkonnen invaders and the Fremen rebels also echoes the human-ape relations. Sci-fi epics don’t get bigger than Dune.

War of the Worlds  (2005)

Before Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, regular sci-fi screenwriter Josh Friedman found his first break with Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. Adapting the classic HG Wells novel of the same name, the survival thriller finds Tom Cruise saving his family in the face of a Martian invasion.

Planet of the Apes (1968)

While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and its companion reboots would win over a new audience, it’s always worth revisiting the 1968 original. Set in a dystopian planet of apes enslaving humans, you need to watch Planet of the Apes for its sheer scope and ambition.
