What to know

Celebrated director of Your Name and Weathering With You helms Suzume as his seventh full-length feature

Suzume is a fantasy anime film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai. Shinkai is one of the leading directors in Japan following an illustrious career stemming from his short films of the 1990s-2000s to the exceptional critical and financial success achieved with 2016’s Your Name which became the third highest-grossing anime film of all time. His follow-up to Your Name, 2019’s Weathering With You, became the highest-grossing film of that year. On August 24th, 2022, Shinkai's own novel adaptation of Suzume was published.

Shinkai’s frequent collaborators, character designer Masayoshi Tanaka and art director Takumi Tanji, worked on Suzume as well. Both were involved in the production of Your Name and Weathering With You.

Nanoka Hara earned the role of voicing Suzume Iwato following a rigorous open audition process that included numerous other actresses. Suzume is her first anime voice acting gig and having been a long-time fan of director Shinkai's works, it is ultimately a dream come true for her. Other members of the voice cast includes Hokuto Matsumura, Eri Fukatsu, Shota Sometani, Sairi Ito and Kotone Hanase.
