Jon M. Chu began his filmmaking career by directing movies such as “Step Up 2: The Streets” (2008), “Step Up 3D” (2010), and two early documentaries about superstar Justin Bieber, “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” (2011) and “Justin Bieber’s Believe” (2013). He directed his first action movie, “G.I. Joe Retaliation” (2013), before taking on another sequel in “Now You See Me 2” (2016). His movie “Crazy Rich Asians” (2018) was the critical and commercial success that took Chu’s career to the next level. From there he directed a movie adaptation of the musical “In the Heights” (2021) before going on to helm a two-part retelling of the epic musical Wicked. His movies “Wicked” (2024) and “Wicked: For Good” (2025) have been widely lauded, with the first movie receiving ten Academy Award nominations and winning Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
