After beginning his career in television, Joe Wright announced himself as a director of feature films with “Pride & Prejudice” (2005) and followed it up with “Atonement” (2007), both of which were widely acclaimed. A period movie specialist, Wright went on to direct “Anna Karenina” (2012) after having helmed “The Soloist” (2009) and “Hanna” (2011), both of which saw him branch out into different genres. He teamed up with Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara for “Pan” (2015) before directing his Academy Award-winning Winston Churchill biopic “Darkest Hour” (2017), which featured an outstanding performance from Gary Oldman. He reunited with Gary Oldman for the psychological thriller “The Woman In The Window” (2019) starring Amy Adams before adapting the 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac for his romantic musical movie “Cyrano” (2021). Wright has directed an episode of the anthology series “Black Mirror” (2016), as well as two episodes of “The Agency” (2024). His eight-part series “Mussolini: Son of the Century” (2025) is a biographical drama based on the rise of the Italian fascist dictator.
