What to know

Christopher Nolan directs all-star cast including Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon and frequent collaborator Cillian Murphy in historical biopic

Oppenheimer is a historical biopic written and directed by Christopher Nolan for Universal Pictures. It is based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, American Prometheus: The Triumph And Tragedy Of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Nolan is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors having previously directed such titles as The Dark Knight trilogy, Memento, Inception, Dunkirk and Tenet, to name a few. It is the sixth time he has directed star Cillian Murphy as they have previously collaborated on the aforementioned Dark Knight trilogy, 2010’s Inception and Dunkirk in 2014. Similarly to many of Nolan's previous projects, there is major emphasis placed on utilizing practical effects over CGI.

Cillian Murphy leads the film as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer amongst a number of familiar names including Emily Blunt as Katherine Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie as Edward Teller and Josh Hartnett as Ernest Lawrence. Rami Malek, Michael Angarano, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine, Jack Quaid, David Dastmalchian, Jason Clarke and Josh Peck round out the cast.

This is why major film studios often choose to shoot significant scenes in IMAX, aiming to deliver a more awe-inspiring cinematic experience to audiences. However, in the case of Oppenheimer, the entire production was filmed in the IMAX format. In the featurette, Nolan justifies this decision by emphasizing that "Oppenheimer's story is one of immense proportions." Furthermore, the director highlights that "Our film endeavors to transport you into his world, and IMAX, in my opinion, provides a level of immersion that surpasses other formats." (Source: Collider)
