The Monkey King

The Monkey King is an animated adventure film directed by Anthony Stacchi for Netflix. It is based on the 16th century Chinese tale of Journey to the West. The original narrative introduces Sun Wukong, a formidable monkey, who emerges from a mystical rock and wields a staff as his primary weapon. Stacchi has a long history in the animation field, having co-directed such films as Open Season, The Boxtrolls which went onto earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature, and the adult animated comedy series, Dallas & Robo. Chicken Little's Steve Bencich and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore's Ron J. Friedman co-wrote the screenplay for The Monkey King.

The film's producers include Peilin Chou and Kendra Haaland while Stephen Chow is credited as an executive producer. Toby Chu is the composer for the project. Pearl Studio, a subsidiary of DreamWorks Animation and based in Shanghai, China, is the primary animation studio behind The Monkey King. They have previously worked on successful projects such as Kung Fu Panda and collaborated with Netflix on Over the Moon.

The Monkey King features an impressive all-Asian voice cast including Jimmy O. Yang from Space Force, Bowen Yang from Saturday Night Live, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport from Watchmen, Jo Koy from Easter Sunday, Ron Yuan from 2020's  Mulan, Hoon Lee from Banshee, Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Andrew Pang from Marvel's Luke Cage, Andrew Kishino from Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Jodi Long from Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, James Sie from Stillwater and BD Wong from Mr. Robot.
