Before becoming the legendary chocolate factory owner with the velvet coat, top hat and cane, Willy Wonka was a quirky, lost soul. In order to succeed, he had to trust his instincts and lean into his individuality. This path of self-discovery led him on the path to magical lands and Oompa-Loompas, and eventually to the become the famous lolly inventor.
Wonka is a fantasy musical movie based on the character of Willy Wonka from Roald Dahl’s children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The film is directed by BAFTA nominated Paul King, best known for directing Paddington, with a screenplay from Simon Farnaby. David Heyman, Luke Kelly and Alexandra Derbyshire produce the film for Warner Bros. Heyman rose to fame as the producer of the entire Harry Potter movie franchise, after securing the rights to the books in 1999. Oscar winning designer, Lindy Hemming (Topsy-Turvy, The Dark Knight), leads the costume department, with Chung Chung-hoon serving as cinematographer (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Neil Hannon (The IT Crowd) scoring the film.
Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Dune) leads the cast as visionary chocolate maker Willy Wonka, with Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant, Richard Fulcher, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Jim Carter and Tom Davis.
