Synopsis
Unleashing his divine destiny: Hercules defies mortality in pursuit of Godhood
Throughout his life, Hercules has always felt like he doesn't belong with ordinary humans. This feeling is justified, considering he is not an ordinary mortal but the mighty son of Zeus, known as the strongest man on Earth. However, during his childhood, Hercules was abducted by Hades which deprived him of the opportunity to live as a deity on Mount Olympus. Determined to claim his rightful position among the gods and gain a true understanding of his identity, Hercules seizes every chance that comes his way and embarks on a series of daunting trials.
What to know
2019’s Aladdin director helms another live-action inspired Disney film in Hercules
Hercules is an upcoming adventure film directed by Guy Ritchie for Disney. It serves as a live-action adaptation of the 1997 animated film of the same name originally directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, however it is not a direct adaptation. Disney continues its trend of bringing beloved animated films to life with Hercules joining the ranks of Mulan, Aladdin and The Lion King in receiving the live-action treatment.
Ritchie previously directed the massively successful adaptation of Aladdin in 2019 which earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. He is also best known for his slew of fast-paced gangster films including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. He's also directed Robert Downey Jr. in 2009's Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel. Anthony and Joe Russo of Avengers: Endgame fame also produce Hercules. Dave Callaham helmed screenwriting duties for Hercules after experiencing success in co-writing on such projects as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
