Synopsis
25-Year-Old Augusta resident interrogated by FBI over alleged Russian election document leak
In June 2017, Reality Winner, a 25-year-old residing in Augusta, Georgia, arrives back home after completing errands, only to discover two FBI agents waiting for her. Being an Air Force veteran and yoga instructor, Winner undergoes a two-hour interrogation regarding her role as an intelligence contractor. The focus of the questioning revolves around the possibility of her being responsible for the unauthorized disclosure of a classified document related to Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. elections.

Sydney Sweeney portrays real-life Whistleblower in HBO original film
Reality is a TV drama film directed by Tina Satter for Max. Satter co-wrote the film alongside James Paul Dallas which serves as an adaptation of the FBI interrogation transcript of Reality Winner, an American whistleblower in the intelligence field. She gained prominence for leaking an intelligence report exposing Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. elections. As a consequence of her whistleblowing, Winner was ultimately arrested and sentenced to five years and three months in prison. This penalty stands as the longest sentence ever imposed for unauthorized disclosure of government documents to the media. The screenplay for Reality is based on a play previously staged by Satter in 2019 called Is This A Room. It is produced by Riva Marker, Noah Stahl, Brad Becker-Parton and Greg Nobile.
Sydney Sweeney stars as the titular Reality Winner. Sweeney has grown in popularity throughout the years, showcasing her talent in such titles as Euphoria, Everything Sucks!, The White Lotus and Sharp Objects. Marchánt Davis and Josh Hamilton also star in the film as Taylor (R. Wallace Taylor) and Garrick (Justin C. Garrick) respectively.

- Tina Satter transformed the interrogation transcript of Whistleblower Reality Winner into a verbatim theatre production titled Is This A Room. The play, named after a quote from one of the interrogators, made its debut at The Kitchen in 2019. It subsequently enjoyed an extended Off-Broadway run at the Vineyard Theatre later that year. Sweeney watched interviews and had Zoom and text conversations with Winner, studying her speaking style and mannerisms. To further embody the character, Sweeney underwent physical training to increase her muscle mass, even utilizing workout routines that Winner had shared on her Instagram. Winner also contributed to the film's production process by offering insights and collaborating with the wardrobe and art departments. During the production, filming began with exterior shots while the final phase of 9-10 days was dedicated to capturing the scenes set inside the room. Interestingly, the entire interrogation sequence was filmed in chronological order, which Sydney Sweeney, accustomed to filming scenes out of order in previous projects, found to be an unusual approach.
