The story is set in 1920, during the Dutch East Indies era, Stovia University produced native medical graduates. The story begins with a young doctor, a Stovia graduate, named Giandra (Aditya Zoni), reading the Javasche Courant newspaper about a girl in Karuhun village who was shackled. At that time, shackling was part of the way to cure mental illness. The mystical treatment handled by a shaman was very contrary to Giandra as a doctor. The shackled girl was named Layla (Aisha Kastolan) and the news in the newspaper was written by Rikke (Aurelia Lourdes), a journalist of mixed Dutch and native descent. Giandra decided to meet Layla in Karuhun village, a village far from the city. To reach Karuhun village, Giandra had to ride a cart (a vehicle pulled by a buffalo). Upon arriving at Karuhun village, Giandra was greeted by Rikke because Rikke was also curious about Giandra's arrival in the remote village at the foot of the mountain. Rikke simply conveyed three words to Giandra: Culture, Mysticism, and Superstition. This became Giandra's journey, a battle between the science she'd learned and the culture and beliefs passed down through generations.
