Though still in its teens, A24 stands shoulder to shoulder with century-old studios for its outsized cultural impact, Oscar-winning track record, and influence on modern cinema. Despite its relatively short history, the studio has built a strong identity as a home for original storytelling, auteur filmmakers, and stylistic, genre-bending films.
A24’s distinctiveness stems from its refusal to confine its movies to a single genre, like Blumhouse with horror, or a specific form, like Pixar with animation. Instead, it focuses on championing films that are unique, reinvent storytelling in their own way, and defy easy classification. Known for its ambitious projects, the studio has now set its sights on adapting the hugely popular dark-fantasy game Elden Ring into a live-action series alongside director Alex Garland. The story is based on a world co-created by George R. R. Martin, the acclaimed author behind the bestselling books that inspired HBO’s landmark series Game of Thrones. This, however, isn’t the first time A24 has ventured into the world of fantasy. The studio has built an impressive library of films that merge fantastical, and sci-fi elements, with complex characters, and stories. So while you wait for Elden Ring, check out some of A24’s best fantasy films.
Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)
The film that won A24 seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Everything Everywhere All At Once, is a mix of fantasy, sci-fi, martial arts, drama, comedy, and magical realism. With a dynamic cast, The Daniels have put together a film that is as much a visual masterpiece as it is emotionally entertaining and mind-bending. The story follows Evelyn Quan Wang, the owner of a failing laundromat, who is tasked with saving the multiverse after she is decidedly tagged as the least remarkable version of herself across realities. Burdened by the weight of saving countless worlds, Evelyn is thrust into an epic journey traveling through alternate dimensions, forced to confront all the possibilities of what her life could have been, while also facing an antagonistic version of a loved one to save the worlds from collapsing into nothingness.
Death of a Unicorn (2025)
Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd star in this fantasy horror-comedy as a father-daughter duo who accidentally kill a unicorn and trigger a weekend of mayhem, magical chaos, and dark secrets. Death of a Unicorn follows Elliot Kinter (Rudd), a widowed father traveling with his teenage daughter (Ortega), Ridley, to spend the weekend at his billionaire boss’ private estate. En route, they run over a young unicorn and soon discover that the creature possesses powerful healing abilities. With the unicorn’s body hidden in their trunk, they arrive at the estate, only to set off a bizarre and brutal showdown between the ultra-rich and the mythical.
The Legend of Ochi (2025)
An imaginative and somewhat creepy fantasy adventure film, The Legend of Ochi is set in a remote mountain village where the people of the town are taught from childhood to stay indoors after dark and to fear and hate the land’s mysterious and dark creatures known as the Ochi. The story follows Yuri, a young farmer girl who befriends a lost, young Ochi and embarks on an epic journey deep into the forest to reunite the Ochi with his family.
Swiss Army Man (2016)
Before The Daniels went on to create the Academy Award-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once, they released Swiss Army Man, a wacky, dark survival drama-comedy starring Paul Dano as Hank, a man stranded on a deserted island, and Daniel Radcliffe as Manny, a flatulent corpse with strange powers. With Hank stranded on the island and on the verge of giving up, he stumbles upon a corpse with unusual abilities that include being able to propel through water using only farts. He names the undead corpse Manny and begins using his bizarre abilities like a Swiss Army knife (hence the name) to try to make his way back to civilisation. What follows is an oddball fantasy adventure that is as heartfelt as it is absurd.
The Green Knight (2021)
The Green Knight is a dark, atmospheric, fantasy film based on the 14th century Arthurian poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." The film stars Dev Patel as Gawain, an unproven knight who challenges a supernatural figure known as the Green Knight to prove himself. The challenge: Gawain can strike the Green Knight with any blow, but he must be able to travel to the Green Chapel and accept the same blow one year later. Acting on his impatience, Gawain beheads the Green Knight, only to later realise that he’ll have to face the same fate. A year passes, and when the time comes to fulfill his promise to the Knight, Gawain sets off on a journey filled with strange characters, surreal challenges, and moral tests that force him to confront his own choices.
Tuesday (2023)
Tuesday is a dark fantasy film about a mother who tries to cheat death in order to save her terminally ill daughter from dying. When Death itself appears in the form of a talking, shape-shifting macaw, Tuesday, a terminally ill 15-year-old girl, welcomes it into her house out of curiosity and acceptance. Her mother, Zora, however, has more trouble accepting the idea and ends up eating Death to save her daughter. What follows is a magical and absurd series of events that force both characters to confront love, loss, and the act of letting go.
Slice (2018)
Set in the fictional town of Kingfisher, where 40,000 ghosts reside, Slice follows the murder of a pizza delivery boy en route to a delivery. His death sparks the curiosity of several locals, including fellow delivery driver Astrid and a mysterious werewolf named Dax. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the murder is part of a larger prophecy involving a coven of witches attempting to summon hell on Earth. If you enjoy a mix of campy horror, comedy, and supernatural fantasy, give Slice a watch. It’s weird, wild, and unlike your typical horror films.
The Lighthouse (2019)
While we’re on the subject of fantasy-horror, you should also check out The Lighthouse. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Ephraim Winslow and Willem Dafoe as Thomas Wake, two lighthouse keepers stranded on a remote, storm-battered island off the coast of New England in the late 19th century. Tasked with manning the lighthouse for four weeks, the men gradually succumb to isolation and cabin fever, leading to hallucinations of mermaids, sea gods, and monstrous birds. The film unfolds like a dark maritime folktale, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, and delivering an ethereal, dreamlike, and deliberately unsettling experience.
