How To Train Your Dragon is one of the most beloved animated franchises of the 21st century, with each film in the trilogy earning an Academy Award nomination and capturing the hearts of fans from across the globe. The franchise has since expanded to include several television series, theme park attractions, and even a live-action film that brings the magic of Berk to life in a whole new way.

Creating a live-action remake of a beloved animated classic is always a gamble, but for DreamWorks that gamble has paid off. The new How To Train Your Dragon live-action film is soaring high at the global box office and has earned a rare score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. With the franchise back in spotlight, there’s no better time to saddle up and soar through the skies of Berk, here’s your no nonsense guide on how and where to watch every How To Train Your Dragon movie in order.

How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

Based on Cressida Cowell’s bestselling fantasy novel of the same name, How To Train Your Dragon introduces viewers to a mythical world where Vikings and dragons collide. The story follows Hiccup, the teenage son of the village chieftain, who dreams of becoming a dragon slayer. But everything changes when he captures the elusive Night Fury, only to realise he no longer wants to kill it. Instead, he befriends the dragon, names him Toothless, and begins to train him, marking the start of an unbreakable friendship and a series of unforgettable adventures.

Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon (2010)

DreamWorks has a longstanding tradition of releasing bonus short films with the DVD release of its feature films. Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon is a 16-minute short film that was broadcasted on Cartoon Network and released as a special feature on the DVD and Blu-ray release of the first animated feature. The short follows Hiccup and other young fellows as they accompany their mentor Gobbler on a quest to kill the legendary Boneknapper Dragon.

Book of Dragons (2011)

Book of Dragons is an 18-minute short film that reveals the legend behind the Book of Dragons and features insider dragon-training secrets. It expands on the dragon lore by introducing 14 different dragons, each categorised into seven distinct classes. Most of the main characters from the film return, including Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs, Toothless, and Gobber.

Gift of the Night Fury (2011)

Gift of the Night Fury, also known as Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury, is a 22-minute holiday special set during the Vikings’ winter celebration, Snoggletog. When all the dragons mysteriously fly away for migration, Toothless is left behind in the village of Berk. Hiccup secretly works on a special gift for his dragon, leading to a heartwarming new adventure for the duo.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)

The high-flying follow-up, How To Train Your Dragon 2, picks up five years after the events of the first film. Hiccup and Toothless have transformed the Viking village of Berk into a dragon-loving society. The rest of the world, however, remains wary of these fire-breathing creatures. In this action-packed sequel, Hiccup faces off against Drago Bludvist, a ruthless dragon conqueror determined to capture the legendary Night Fury. Joining the adventure is Valka, Hiccup’s long-lost mother, who along with genes also shares his passion for protecting dragons.

Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers (2014)

Released as a special feature on the DVD and Blu-ray of How to Train Your Dragon 2, Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers is a 26-minute short film set before the events of the second movie. It takes place between Dragons: Defenders of Berk and Dragons: Race to the Edge, and follows Hiccup and his friends as they compete for the very first title of Dragon Racing Champion of Berk.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)

The final chapter in the trilogy, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, takes place just a year after the events of the second film. With Hiccup now serving as the new chieftain of Berk, the Vikings and Toothless continue their mission to rescue captured dragons and bring them back to the village. However, the growing dragon population turns Berk into a prime target for hunters. Determined to protect both his people and the dragons, Hiccup sets out to find the fabled Hidden World his father once spoke of. The film explores Hiccup’s inner struggle as he wrestles with the heart-wrenching decision to either stay with Toothless or let him go so he can live safely, far from human threats. The story also introduces a new love interest for Toothless, the intelligent and elusive Light Fury.

How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (2019)

Set 10 years after the events of the third film but before the epilogue, How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming is a 22-minute short film that follows Hiccup and Astrid’s efforts to convince their children that dragons aren’t dangerous by reviving the Snoggletog Pageant. Meanwhile, Toothless and the Light Fury set out on their own journey to find their dragon children, who have run away in search of Hiccup.

How To Train Your Dragon: Snoggletog Log (2019)

How to Train Your Dragon: Snoggletog Log is a seasonal, atmospheric special inspired by the traditional Yule Log. This 28-minute short features several Viking and dragon characters from the Rescue Riders series relaxing in a cosy room, enjoying the warmth of a crackling fireplace. Unlike the other specials, it isn’t story-driven but instead serves as a calming, ambient experience created for festive background viewing and relaxation.

How To Train Your Dragon (2025)

In 2023, DreamWorks confirmed that a live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon was officially in the works. Writer and director Dean DeBlois returned to helm the project, with composer John Powell also returning to create the score. The film stars Mason Thames as Hiccup and Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast, the chieftain of Berk. The live-action How To Train Your Dragon marks DreamWorks’ debut in live-action remake, bringing the beloved animated world of Berk to life in a whole new way.
