Stephen Lang began his onscreen career by starring in movies such as “Manhunter” (1986), “Gettysburg” (1993), and “Tombstone” (1993), where he moved seamlessly between the genres of crime thriller, historical drama, and American western. He went on to star in the prequel war drama “Gods and Generals” (2003), which saw him reprise the role of Lieutenant General Stonewall Jackson. He appeared in the movies “Public Enemies” (2009), “The Men Who Stare at Goats” (2009), and James Cameron’s epic “Avatar,” which marked one of his most recognizable roles as Colonel Miles Quartich. Lang reprised his role in the movies “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022) and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (2025). His other major roles include the horror movies “Don’t Breathe” (2016) and the sequel “Don’t Breathe 2” (2021), as well as the sports biopic “The Featherweight” (2024). Lang has a storied career on the small screen, beginning with his role in “Crime Story” (1986–1988) all the way to his lead role as Commander Nathaniel Taylor in “Terra Nova” (2011). He has also appeared in “Salem” (2014–2017), “Into the Badlands” (2015–2018), and the biblical drama “House of David” (2025). Lang has appeared in multiple stage plays and has been nominated for a Tony Award for his work in theater.
