What to know

Christopher Nolan directs World War II biopic

Oppenheimer is a drama biography film adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Produced by Syncopy Inc and Universal Pictures, the film is written and directed by British filmmaker Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception, Tenet). He previously worked primarily with Warner Bros.

Nolan is a vocal advocate for theatrical releases for films rather than direct to streaming services. In light of Warner Bros.’s push to release their 2021 film slate both theatrically and on HBO Max simultaneously, Nolan ended his working relationship with the studio after nearly twenty years. Oppenheimer will be Nolan’s first film with Universal Pictures.

Cillian Murphy stars in the titular role. Murphy and Nolan are frequent collaborators having previously worked together on Dunkirk and Batman Begins. Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) plays Katherine Oppenheimer. The all-star cast also includes Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Florence Pugh (A Good Person), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) and Kenneth Branagh (Murder on the Orient Express).
