The story follows a single mom named Solène who finds herself unexpectedly drawn into a romance with Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of the world's most popular boy band and sixteen years her junior. Their encounter happens when Solène accompanies her teenage daughter to Coachella after her ex cancels last minute. Instantly, there's a strong connection between Solène and Hayes. Their whirlwind romance faces inevitable hurdles due to Hayes' celebrity status and Solène realizes navigating life in his spotlight comes with major challenges.
Michael Showalter is best known for creating the Wet Hot American Summer franchise with David Wain. He also co-created the dark comedy series Search Party as well as directed the 2017 romantic-dramedy The Big Sick which went on to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards. He co-wrote the screenplay with Kissing Jessica Stein screenwriter Jennifer Westfeldt. She also wrote and directed 2011's Friends with Kids and starred in such TV shows as Grey's Anatomy, 24 and Younger.
Showalter and Lee serve as producers on The Idea of You along with star Anne Hathaway, Cathy Schulman, Gabrielle Union, Eric Hayes and Jordana Mollick. Jim Frohna handles cinematography duties on the film. He has worked on such titles as Transparent, I Love Dick, Shrinking and Big Little Lies.

She is a celebrated actress, winning the prestigious Oscar in 2013 for Les Misérables and appearing in such films as The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada, Rachel Getting Married, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and Ocean's 8. Nicholas Galitzine portrays Hayes and is best known for his roles in Red, White & Royal Blue and Bottoms. They are joined by Ella Rubin (The Chair) as Izzy, Reid Scott (Veep) as Daniel, Jordan Aaron Hall as Zeke, Jaiden Anthony as Adrian, Raymond Cham Jr as Oliver, Viktor White as Simon, Dakota Adan as Rory, Annie Mumolo (Bridesmaids) as Tracy and Perry Mattfeld (Shameless) as Eva.
