What to know

Lily Rose-Depp and The Weeknd star in HBO drama from Euphoria creator

The Idol is a drama TV series co-created by Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson for HBO. Levinson is best known for creating the HBO series Euphoria and for being the son of famed Hollywood director Barry Levinson. The Weeknd is a Grammy-award winning artist. The trio also executive produce the series along with Joseph Epstein, Ashley Levinson, Aaron L. Gilbert, Nick Hall, Keily Amaya and Sara E. White. The Idol runs for six episodes with Levinson directing each episode.

Amy Seimetz was originally set to direct the series, however due to a creative overhaul on the series, she ended up leaving the project with roughly 80% of it already shot. According to reports, Tesfaye expressed a desire to minimize the "cult" aspect of the show and was worried that it was becoming too focused on a female perspective. In response, Levinson took charge of reshooting and rewriting the series, abandoning Seimetz's original approach that centered around a troubled starlet fighting against a predatory industry figure to reclaim her agency. Instead, the focus was shifted to a love story with a greater emphasis on sexual content and nudity.

Lily Rose-Depp and Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye star as series leads, Jocelyn and Tedros respectively. Global superstar and BLACKPINK member, Jennie Kim, appears in the show as Dyanne along with Suzanna Son as Chloe, Troye Sivan as Caleb, Moses Sumney as Izaak, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Eli Roth as Jocelyn's uncle, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, famed music producer Mike Dean, Ramsey and Hank Azaria as Jocelyn's father. Other recurring roles include Melanie Liburd as Jenna, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley, Nico Hiraga and Anne Heche in what is her final television role before her tragic death in 2022.
