Euphoria creator produces HBO drama featuring Lily Rose-Depp and The Weeknd in lead roles
The Idol is a drama TV series co-created by Abel Tesfaye (aka The Weeknd), Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson, the creator of HBO's Euphoria and son of Hollywood director Barry Levinson. Grammy-award winning artist The Weeknd, Fahim, and Levinson serve as executive producers alongside several others. The series consists of six episodes, each directed by Levinson.
Amy Seimetz was originally appointed to direct The Idol, however after significant changes were made to the series, she left the project when roughly 80% of it had been shot. Reportedly, Tesfaye wanted to downplay the "cult" aspect of the show and was concerned that it was becoming too female-centric. In response, Levinson took over the project, deciding to re-shoot and rewrite the series. This involved abandoning Seimetz's original vision of a story featuring a struggling actress fighting against an exploitative industry figure to reclaim her agency. Instead, the series was retooled as a love story with a greater focus on sexual content and nudity.
The Idol stars Lily Rose-Depp and Abel Tesfaye as the lead characters Jocelyn and Tedros respectively. BLACKPINK member and celebrated superstar Jennie Kim plays Dyanne, with Suzanna Son portraying Chloe, Troye Sivan as Caleb, Moses Sumney as Izaak, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Eli Roth as Jocelyn's uncle, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, music producer Mike Dean, Ramsey, and Hank Azaria as Jocelyn's father. Recurring roles include Melanie Liburd as Jenna, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley, Nico Hiraga, and Anne Heche, in her final television role before her death in 2022.
