Jigarthanda (2014)
Both movies can even be watched independently as Jigarthanda Double X attempts to ape the core concept of Jigarthanda and focus on a different setting and different characters. While the 2014 movie focused on a novice director filming the exploits of a real-life gangster, the same director-gangster equation plays out in Jigarthanda Double X but in the 1970s. But a post-credits scene connects the two movies with a younger version of Sethu (the gangster in Jigarthanda) revealed to be the son of Alliyan Caesar (the gangster in Jigarthanda Double X).
Both movies are interesting time capsules to the eras in which they are set. Jigarthanda captures the 2010s modernity well while Jigarthanda Double X emulates the turbulent politics of the ‘70s along with the rise of then-upcoming stars like Tamil hit-machine Rajinikanth. Even The Godfather and The Godfather II, both of which released in the early 1970s, are heavily referenced in this prequel.
