Season 2

In celebration of Prime Day, Amazon Prime Video has released a sizzle of its hottest 2023 shows, including The Boys spin-off Gen V, Donald Glover’s Mr and Mrs Smith series and The Burial starring Jamie Foxx.

The sizzle reel kicked off with a look at some of Prime Video’s returning shows starting with Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Starring John Krasinski, the show has just released the final episodes of its fourth and final season on Friday 14 July. Krasinski returns as Jack Ryan, along with Wendell Pierce (Jim Greer)), Michael Kelly (Mike November) and Betty Gabriel (Elizabeth Wright) all reprising their roles. If you haven’t yet watched the fourth season, here’s a recap of the series so far to get you up to speed.

As one door closes, another opens for Prime Video, with the release of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 on the same day. The long awaited second season sees Belly returning to Cousins Beach. Based on the books by Jenny Han (who serves as co-showrunner on the series), here’s everything you need to know before watching.

Additional shows returning to Prime Video this year include the second seasons of Reacher in December and The Wheel of Time in September. Good Omens season 2 is also back on Prime Video this month on July 28. Michael Sheen and David Tennant return as the polar opposite Aziraphale and Crowley, with Jon Hamm as Archangel Gabriel.

There are also a host of new shows and movies landing on the streaming service this year, including The Boys spin-off series Gen V. The series follows Marie and Emma, two new students at Godolkin University. Godolkin is specifically for superheroes, and teaches students how to master their powers. Gen V is arriving in September, along with new movies ‘A Million Miles Away’ and ‘Cassandro’.

A Million Miles Away, starring Michael Peña (Narcos: Mexico) is based on the true story of Jose Hernandez, the first migrant farmworker to travel to space. Hernandez was rejected by NASA 11 times before finally accomplishing his dream of going to space. The film is directed by Mexican writer and director Alejandra Márquez Abella (Northern Skies over Empty Space), and also features Garret Dillahunt (Sprung).

Cassandro is another biographical film starring Gael García Bernal in the titular role. Saúl Armendáriz was a gay wrestler in the early 1980s who lived in Texas and would cross the Mexican border to Ciudad Juarez to compete in lucha libre wrestling matches. When he meets Sabrina, a new trainer, she suggests he compete as an exotico (male wrestler fighting in drag). Armendàriz then begins performing under the stage name Cassandro to massive success.

Jamie Foxx’s drama The Burial is set for an October release on Prime Video. Foxx stars as attorney Willie E. Gary, who helps a funeral home owner Jeremiah O’Keefe (played by Tommy Lee Jones) save an important deal. In the process, the unlikely team uncover racial injustice and corporate fraudulence.

Eddie Murphy’s Christmas comedy movie Candy Cane Lane is set for December release, starring Tracee Ellis Ross, Robin Thede and Nick Offerman. The film is written by Kelly Younger and directed by Reginald Hudlin.

Romantic comedy Red, White and Royal Blue is headed to the streamer this August. When the United States President’s son is involved in an incident with Britain’s Prince Henry, the tabloids pick up the story. When the story threatens US/ UK relations, the two rivals are forced to make nice in front of the cameras, which then leads to a much more intimate relationship. The film is based on Casey McQuiston’s novel of the same name. Taylor Zakhar Perez stars as Alex Clarement-Diaz (the US President’s son), with Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry. Uma Thurman plays Ellen Thurman, the first female President of the United States, with Stephen Fry as the British King and grandfather of Henry.

Last but not least is a first look at Amazon Prime Video’s Mr and Mrs Smith series. The show stars Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Maya Erskine (PEN15) as the titular couple. Glover also co-creates the show with Francesca Sloane. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was originally attached to the project, but dropped out after six months of development due to creative differences. She is still developing a Tomb Raider reboot series for Amazon Studio, but the show doesn’t have a release date yet.
