What to know

Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Dafoe star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Frankenstein-esque tale

Poor Things is a surrealist drama film produced by Film4 Productions, Fruit Tree, Element Pictures, and TSG Entertainment. The film is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who is known for his films that often contain elements of dark humour and unsettling themes such as The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Favourite. Poor Things is adapted from Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name. The screenplay is written by Tony McNamara, who previously collaborated with Lanthimos on The Favourite, co-wrote Cruella, and created the series The Great.

Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone stars as Bella Baxter, the resurrected woman who attempts to live a truly authentic life. Willem Dafoe stars as Dr Godwin Baxter, the doctor who brings Bella back to life. Mark Ruffalo plays Duncan Wedderbum, a lawyer with whom Bella runs off to embark on her new life’s adventure. They are joined by American comedians Jerrod Carmichael, who plays Harry Astley, and Ramy Youssef, who plays Max McCandles. Also featuring in the film’s strong cast are Christopher Abbott, Kathryn Hunter, Margaret Qualley, Wayne Brett, and Suzy Bemba.
