Gal Gadot is gearing up for the release of her Netflix action-thriller Heart of Stone, where she plays intelligence agent Rachel Stone. She recently sat down with Vogue Hong Kong, and discussed her upcoming projects including Disney’s Snow White.

Taking on the role of the Evil Queen in Disney’s upcoming live-action musical, Snow White, Gadot said “because it’s a musical, I could stretch out my performance and make it so much more dramatic and so much more animated, that it was just simply delightful”. Calling the part “delicious”, she shared how much fun it was to play the character, and how she worked with her voice and other acting techniques to bring the Evil Queen to life.

Since her rise to stardom after the success of Wonder Woman, Gadot has consistently headlined big-budget movies including spy Rachel Stone in Heart of Stone, Cleopatra in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming eponymous film and Sarah Black / The Bishop in Red Notice, a role which she is set to reprise in two more Red Notice films alongside Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson. The Evil Queen is another powerful, female character for Gadot to add to her impressive repertoire.

Based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first ever full-length animated feature. The Disney movie was released in 1937. The live-action film is the latest in a long string of Disney remakes. Walt Disney Pictures president Sean Bailey has also expressed interest in expanding The Lion King live-action movies into a franchise similar to Star Wars. Other remakes from the last few years include Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin

Snow White stars Rachel Zegler as the titular princess. Zegler is known for her starring role as Maria in West Side Story. Tony Award winner Andrew Burnap stars as the male lead, Jonathan, a new character in the remake. Burnap is also known for his work as Phil in WeCrashed

Helmed by (500) Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb, the screenplay is co-written by Erin Cressida Wilson and Greta Gerwig. Gerwig was also recently confirmed to write and direct two ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ movies for Netflix.

British director Gurinder Chadha, known for Bend It Like Beckham, was also rumoured as a serious contender to helm the Snow White movie. She is now directing an original musical feature film inspired by a princess in Indian history for Disney.

Original songs for the fairy tale remake are composed by Tony and Academy Award winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Pasek and Paul are known for their hit musical Dear Evan Hansen, and work on films The Greatest Showman and La La Land, which they are currently adapting into a musical for the stage. Pasek and Paul also wrote two original songs for Disney’s live-action Aladdin movie.

Snow White has a scheduled UK release date of March 22, 2024.
