The U.S Women’s Football team are on their way to a potential third World Cup title, and Netflix has ordered a documentary series to capture their journey throughout the World Cup. Production on the series is currently ongoing in Australia and New Zealand, where the World Cup is taking place. It is set to premiere on Netflix this autumn.

The U.S Women’s National Team is the most decorated team in football history. The show will give viewers a close-up view at the trials and tribulations of competing at the top level of competition, as the team strives for their third consecutive World Cup title. The show is set to raise issues ranging from “racial diversity, LGBTQ+ rights, equal pay, family, and motherhood.” Particularly regarding how these issues affect the future of women in sport.

Football stars Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan will feature in the series. Rapinoe has recently announced that this will be her last World Cup, after winning gold with the national team at the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cups, and the 2012 London Summer Olympics, along with a silver win at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The show is produced by Time Studios, Words + Pictures and Togethxr, with the goal of creating an intimate look at how the U.S Women’s National Team players and coaches prepare mentally, physically and emotionally. Kristie Mewis, Sofia Huerta, and Lynn Williams will also feature in the series, along with up and coming star player Alyssa Thompson. More players are expected to participate in the series, but haven’t been announced yet.

The series is directed by Rebecca Gitlitz. Gitlitz’s previous work includes 30 for 30 and has earned her two Emmy Awards. Executive producers on the series include Connor Schell, Mike Beck, Alexa Conway, Rebecca Gitlitz, Libby Geist, Jamie Patricof, Ian Orefice and Jessica Sherif. Marie Margolius and Nick Eisenberg produce the currently untitled series.

The untitled U.S Women’s National Football Team docuseries adds to Netflix’s large selection of sports documentaries. Some of Netflix’s existing titles include Formula 1’s Drive To Survive, which follows the cutthroat world of elite racing as the players compete on the global circuit. The show is currently in production on its sixth season.

There is also tennis documentary series Break Point, following the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in key competitions on the tours. There is also the hugely popular cheerleading series Cheer, American Football series Last Chance U, football documentary series Sunderland ‘Til I Die, and upcoming freediving documentary film The Deepest Breath.

The Deepest Breath premieres on Netflix on July 19.
