What to know

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin pivot from documentaries to narrative film in Netflix biopic

Nyad is a biographical sports drama produced by Black Bear Pictures and Mad Chance Productions for Netflix. The film is directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who also collaborated on 2018’s documentary Free Solo. The duo usually create documentaries together, and Nyad marks their first foray into narrative drama. They based the story on Diana Nyad’s autobiography Find a Way, which was adapted into a screenplay by Ann Biderman and Julia Cox. The Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda is behind the camera.

The long-distance swimming sensation Diana Nyad is played by Annette Bening. She is joined by acclaimed Hollywood actress Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs), who plays Nyad’s coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll. Rhys Ifans stars as John Bartlett, the captain of the catamaran that accompanies Nyad on her journey.
