A grieving elderly woman and young man strike up an unlikely friendship with an octopus

Tova is an aging widow who works nights cleaning the aquarium in Sowell Bay, Washington. During her shifts, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with the octopus Marcellus, and he comes to know her quite well. When young drifter Cameron comes to town, intent on tracking down his absent father, he starts working alongside Tova, increasingly taking on her responsibilities as she becomes less able to work. While Tova and Cameron are both grieving different losses, Marcellus understands that they are asking the same question—and that he might just have the answer.
