Each resident of the city corresponds to a different element: air, fire, water, and land. Although some elements are seemingly incompatible, when Ember, a hot-headed fire element, meets the laid-back water element Wade, they find out they have more in common than they originally thought.

Elemental is an upcoming animated co-production by Pixar Animation Studio and Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 27th animated feature produced by Pixar, a studio renowned for its equally profound and fun storylines. The film is directed by Peter Sohn, who previously helmed another Pixar/Disney production, The Good Dinosaur (2015). Brenda Hsueh writes the screenplay for the film, working closely with director Sohn. The inspiration for the story exploring feelings of alienation and seemingly irreconcilable differences comes from Sohn’s own migration background. His family emigrated from South Korea in the 1970s, with Sohn growing up in the Bronx in New York City.
The voice cast includes Leah Lewis as the fiery Ember Lumen, and Mamoudou Athie as Wade Ripple, a chill water element. The film’s score is composed by Thomas Newman, who previously wrote the music for Pixar films Finding Nemo (2003), WALL-E (2008) and Finding Dory (2016).
