The Residence (2025)

The Residence is just pure fun, if you like whodunnits but especially if you really enjoy snarky American ones like Poker Face or Knives Out - Benoit Blanc gets a namecheck early on in this comedy about an impossible murder that takes place inside the White House. The Blanc-esque detective here is played to perfection by Uzo Aduba as the kooky, sharp Cordelia Cupp, and the script - which turns flashbacks into both a smart riddle and a constant source of punchlines - keeps finding twists and side gags for maximum delight. It’s a corking crime comedy drama, and a whole lot extra.

What would happen if Knives Out were set in the White House? Well, you'd get The Residence is what would happen. This new, very wacky slapstick comedy series brings all the charm and intrigue of classic detective stories and adds layers upon layers of fun. Giancarlo Esposito is as watchable as ever, bringing all his usual screen presence and gravitas to a much lighter role than we are used to seeing him in. There's definitely scope for more stories in this world, and I'm going to need The Residence season 2 to get the greenlight immediately because I can’t get enough of this show.
