Synopsis

Bella Baxter is brought back to life in a Frankenstein-esque story

A young girl, Bella Baxter is brought back from the dead by an eccentric scientist, and must relearn how to live in the world once more. Bella is curious, and eager to experience the world. When she falls in love with a charming lawyer, she yearns to travel with him and redefine what it means to be a liberated woman.

What to know

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone reunite for female Frankenstein film

Poor Things is a fantasy black comedy film directed by Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos. Lanthimos has previously directed films including The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Lobster. The screenplay is written by Australian playwright Tony McNamara, who is also the creator of The Great. Poor Things is based on the book of the same name by Alasdair Gray. Poor Things made its world premiere on September 1, 2023 at Venice International Film Festival.

Emma Stone stars as Bella Baxter, a woman recently brought back from the dead. The Academy Award winning actress has acted in La La Land and Lanthimos’s film The Favourite. Mark Ruffalo stars as charming, debaucherous lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, with Willem Dafoe as Dr. Godwin Baxter. Ramy Youssef plays Max McCandles, with Christopher Abbott as Alfie Blessington and Jerrod Carmichael as Harry Astley. Margaret Qualley plays Felicity, with Kathryn Hunter as Madame Swiney.
