What to know

Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd star in provocative HBO drama

The Idol is a drama series produced for HBO in the United States. It is co-created by award-winning musician The Weeknd, Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim. The show has six episodes in season one. When Levinson took over the project, there was a creative overhaul with insiders on the production calling the redirection more sexually disturbing and involved extensive reshoots. Much of the production was also arranged around The Weeknd’s touring schedule.

The Idol is scheduled to premiere out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. Lily-Rose Depp (The King) stars as Jocelyn, alongside The Weeknd (Uncut Gems) as Tedros. Australian singer-songwriter and actor Troye Sivan (Boy, Erased) plays Caleb. Dan Levy, Eli Roth and Hank Azaria also feature in the cast.
