What to know

The Weeknd makes his television debut

The Idol is a drama series produced for HBO in the United States. It is co-created by award-winning musician The Weeknd, Euphoria showrunner Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim. The show has six episodes in season one. When director Amy Seimetz left the project, Levinson took over as director. There was a creative overhaul with insiders on the production calling the redirection more sexually disturbing and involved extensive reshoots. Much of the production was also arranged around The Weeknd’s touring schedule.

The Idol is scheduled to premiere out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. Lily-Rose Depp (Planetarium) stars as Jocelyn, alongside Grammy Award winner The Weeknd as Tedros. Australian singer-songwriter and actor Troye Sivan (Boy, Erased) plays Caleb. Dan Levy, Eli Roth and Hank Azaria also feature in the cast. The show is also jam packed with music industry heavyweights, including K-Pop star Jennie Kim from Blackpink, singer-songwriter Moses Sumney, along with legendary musician and producer Mike Dean who has worked with Scarface, Kanye West and Travis Scott.
