After 14 years of waiting, The Magician’s Elephant found a home at Netflix

The Magician’s Elephant is an animated fantasy adventure film adapted from the novel of the same name by Kate DiCamillo. Wendy Rogers, renowned for her visual effects work on Shrek and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, made her directorial debut with the film. Martin Hynes, who co-wrote Toy Story 4, penned the screenplay. 

Hynes was originally attached to direct the project back in 2009 when 20th Century Fox revealed an adaptation was in the works. After facing a lengthy period of stagnation in the development process, it was revealed in December 2020 that producer Julia Pistor had taken the project to Netflix. The streaming service acquired the film rights to the book and screenplay to create an animated feature film, with Animal Logic providing the animation.

Noah Jupe, a British television and film actor, takes the lead role of Peter. His on-screen sister Adele is played by Pixie Davis, both of whom have numerous television and film credits to their names including Honey Boy and Mary Poppins Returns. Benedict Wong lends his voice to the character of the Magician. Brian Tyree Henry, Miranda Richardson, Dawn French, Sian Clifford and Aasif Mandvi round out the voice cast.
