What to know

Grammy nominated artist Halle Bailey makes her movie debut as Princess Ariel

The Little Mermaid is Disney’s live action remake of the original 1989 animated film of the same name. Veteran Disney director Rob Marshall brings this live-action fantasy vision to life. Jane Goldman and David Magee have worked on writing the screenplay for this adaptation.

Hamilton’s producer Lin-Manual Miranda joins the project as the producer, and works alongside film composer Alan Menken on the music for the film. It’s worth noting that Alan made his debut as a film composer with the original 1989 animated version of the film. The new movie will feature songs from the original movie along with expanded work written by Menken and Miranda.

Grammy nominated singer Halle Bailey, known as one half of the musical duo Chloe X Halle, makes her full feature debut with The Little Mermaid. She is joined by Jonah Hauer-King as her love interest Prince Eric, and veteran actor Javier Bardem who signs on to play the role of her strict father King Triton. Melissa McCarthy is Ursula and Daveed Diggs is cast as Sebastian, the loveable and trusted sea crab. The Little Mermaid cast also features appearances from actors Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Jude Akuwudike and Lorena Andrea amongst others.
