American Born Chinese - Season 1

Acclaimed actors Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan star in Disney’s series adaptation of American Born Chinese

Based on a graphic novel of the same name, American Born Chinese is a Disney fantasy action show centered around themes of Chinese mythology. Destin Daniel Cretton leads the first season of the series as the director and executive producer on the show. He is also the director of Marvel’s Asian superhero film Shang Chi, where actor Michelle Yeoh and him worked together first.

The show’s costumes have been designed by leading Asian-American designers Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim. Prabal Gurung’s designs have been frequently spotted on the red carpet by popular Indian figures such as Alia Bhatt and Isha Ambani. 

The show features a popular ensemble cast with award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh starring as the ethereal Chinese Goddess Guanyin. Screen and theater actress Stephanie Hsu plays Shiji Niangniang, another ancient Goddess. Actor Ben Wang joins the cast as Jin Wang, the main protagonist caught in the center of the supernatural drama. Jim Liu signs on as Wei-Chen, the foreign exchange student who introduces Jin to the mythical world of Chinese gods.

The show also includes other popular characters from Chinese folklore such as Princess Iron Fan, played by Poppy Liu and Sun Wukong played on screen by Daniel Wu. Actor Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan reunite after their academy award-winning pairing in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.
