What to know

A cast of up-and-coming young talent star in Netflix’s live-action reimagining of the beloved animated series

Avatar: The Last Airbender is a live-action fantasy adventure series produced by Rideback and Nickelodeon for a Netflix release. The series is based on the animated Nickelodeon series of the same title created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko that ran from 2005 to 2008. The series unfolds within a world in which some individuals possess the ability to ‘bend’ one of the core elements: fire, water, earth, and air. The live-action series is headed by Albert Kim, who also writes and executive produces.

Canadian actor Gordon Cormier portrays Aang, the last living airbender and Avatar. He is joined by Kiawentiio, who portrays waterbender Katara, and Ian Ousley as her brother, Sokka. Dallas Liu portrays the exiled prince of the Fire Nation, Prince Zuko, while Paul Sun-Hyung Lee plays his mentor, General Iroh. James Sie reprises his role as the Cabbage Merchant from the animated series.
