Synopsis
A young boy is kidnapped and studied alongside other children at an isolated centre called The Institute
When 12-year-old genius Luke Ellis wakes up to find himself kidnapped and put in an isolated place called The Institute. The other children there all possess unusual powers, and were kidnapped from their homes, just like Luke. Meanwhile, in the town nearby, a former police officer attempts to rebuild his life, but his instincts lead him to investigate the happenings at The Institute.

Stephen King writes more novels in one year than I've written texts in a lifetime, but even the books that don't reach classic status are still better than most out there today. That's also true of the Stephen King film and TV adaptations that inevitably follow too. The Institute is a great example of this because it doesn't do anything new, but it's still a fun, easygoing summertime horror fix. Think of it as MGM+'s answer to Stranger Things with a bit of X-Men and a whole lot of King nostalgia thrown in for kicks. Without psychic powers of your own, you'll just have to trust me on this.

Methadone for Stranger Things addicts
This pulpy nonsense should keep fans waiting for the epic final season of Stranger Things going this summer. Stephen King is, of course, a major influence on Stranger Things, and it's his 2019 novel that's the (faithfully adapted, for the most part) source material here, as we tiptoe tentatively into a secure facility for kids with scary mind powers. The direction is slick, the classic King setting of a godforsaken Maine town is perfectly spooky, and the slightly slack pacing shouldn't bother you too much if you're up for a low-stakes binge.
