After its successful Renaissance period of back-to-back hits like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, Disney entered a bit of a dark age in the early 2000s, marked by a series of box-office failures. So, when traditional fairy tales and folk stories no longer did the trick, Disney decided to take a gamble on smaller productions. That is when Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois brought their whacky, out-of-the-box, original concept to life: an alien experiment programmed for mass destruction, transformed into a fluffy, friendly creature through the companionship of a lonely girl. The result was the first animated Lilo & Stitch movie.
The gamble, of course, paid off, launching a wildly successful franchise that grew to include several more movies and TV spin-offs, including the 2025 live-action reboot. Lilo & Stitch (2002)
The original film that started it all, the 2002 animated Lilo & Stitch, sets the foundation for the rest of the franchise. Set in the tropical dreamland of Hawaii, the movie begins with an alien capable of mass destruction crash-landing on Earth. The alien, Stitch, also known as Experiment 626 (pronounced as six two six), is being hunted by an evil scientist and his ally when he crosses paths with Lilo, a young and innocent human girl who is deeply sad after losing both her parents in a car crash.
Stitch is lost and bewildered about how things in the human world work, and Lilo struggles with loneliness and abandonment. Together, the two save each other from their own personal chaos while setting out on an adventure full of self-discovery and unexpected family. Disney’s madcap story about an unlikely alien friendship, set against the fun tropical backdrop with vibrant, emotional music and laugh-out-loud pranks, sparked the beginning of a heartfelt and enduring franchise that continues to charm fans all over the world.
Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005)
Lilo & Stitch share an unbreakable bond, and this is deeply reflected in Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, a direct-to-DVD feature film. Although it was released after the television series and Stitch! The Movie, it chronologically serves as a direct sequel to the original film. The story puts Lilo and Stitch through an emotional ringer as Stitch begins to malfunction, a result of his creator, Jumba, being arrested before he could fully complete Stitch's programming. The film tests the duo’s friendship as Stitch faces the frightening possibility of death, ultimately reinforcing the meaning of ohana and the strength of love and family.
Stitch! The Movie (2003)
Stitch is Experiment 626, which means there had to be more experiments before him—namely, at least, Experiment 625. Stitch! The Movie expands on this concept Disney initially teased, introducing us to all the strange, quirky, and bizarre intergalactic experiments Jumba created before Stitch. The movie follows Lilo and Stitch as they frantically race around the island trying to locate all the experiments that have been accidentally unleashed from Jumba’s evil lab. Their mission is to contain these experiments and rehabilitate them by stripping away their evil tendencies, showing that even the most mischievous creations can find redemption.
Lilo & Stitch: The Series (2003)
Premiering just a month after Stitch! The Movie, Lilo & Stich: The Series expands on the adventures of Lilo and Stitch as they travel around trying to rehome the other intergalactic experiments. Filled with chaotic escapades, vibrant new characters, and even unexpected crossovers with other Disney shows like Kim Possible and American Dragon: Jake Long, the series is fun, lighthearted, and full of heart, opening the Lilo & Stitch franchise to a world of new possibilities. One of the most memorable additions to the show is Experiment 624, also known as Angel, a clever and mischievous experiment who can turn others evil by singing her song. She later becomes a fan favorite and famously wins over Stitch’s heart. The movies may have introduced us to Lilo and Stitch, but it’s the long-running series that truly solidifies their place in Disney’s animated legacy.
Leroy & Stitch (2006)
The third feature film in the animated Lilo & Stitch series, Leroy & Stitch, follows Stitch, Lilo, and their friends as they travel the world to find homes for the other genetic experiments. After going their separate ways, the experiments realize that their true ohana was with each other all along. They reunite just in time to face a new threat: Leroy, Jumba’s latest and most dangerous experiment, who is sent to Earth to eliminate the other experiments and take over the galaxy. In a final stand, the entire family of experiments teams up to stop Leroy and prevent him from fulfilling his evil mission.
Stitch! (2008)
Similar to Stitch & Ai, Stitch!, is a spin-off television series that takes Stitch outside of Hawaii and reimagines his adventures in a different part of the world with a new human companion. The series initially ran from 2008 to 2011 and pairs Stitch with Yuna, a young Japanese girl who takes him in. Together, the two embark on several fun and chaotic adventures over the course of three seasons. The show provides some backstory, explaining that Stitch and Lilo chose to part ways after a grown-up Lilo leaves for college, setting Stitch on a path to find a new friend. The story also brings back Jumba and Pleakley. With a mix of familiar characters and a host of new ones, Stitch! blends the classic heart and mischief of Stitch’s original adventures with distinct Japanese storytelling styles, making it a welcome and refreshing addition to the franchise.
Stitch & Ai
In 2017, Disney commissioned a donghua (Chinese) spin-off of Lilo & Stitch titled Stitch & Ai. This animated television series follows Stitch after he escapes the clutches of evil alien criminals and finds himself lost and alone in the rural mountains of China. While navigating the lush Huangshan region, Stitch crosses paths with Wang Ai Ying and quickly becomes a part of her family. Together, the duo embark on a series of adventures that echo many memorable moments from the original Lilo & Stitch movie and TV series. As Ai helps Stitch evade the evil Jaboodies trying to capture him once again, Stitch helps Ai resist her sister’s attempts to move her to the city, allowing her to stay in the forest she calls home.
Lilo & Stitch (2025)
Lilo & Stitch is all set for a live-action reboot, nearly 23 years after the beloved story first hit the screens in 2002. Chris Sanders, the writer and director of the original film, will return to voice everyone’s favorite blue-haired alien experiment, Stitch (a.k.a. Experiment 626). He’ll be reprising the role alongside newcomer Maia Kealoha, a Hawaiian native who takes on the iconic role of Lilo. Lilo & Stitch (2025) will also feature the return of several original cast members, including Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee. Set in Hawaii, the film reimagines the prank-filled early adventures of Lilo & Stitch, right from Stitch’s chaotic crash landing on Earth to their battle against the determined scientists and aliens chasing Stitch’s capture in live action.
