Synopsis

Ariel must decide if she will trade her voice and her home for the chance to explore the world out of the water

Ariel is an imaginative young mermaid who dreams of breaking free from her father King Triton’s protection and exploring the world up on firm land. The villainous Ursula offers Ariel a terrible exchange: her voice for a pair of human legs so she can join Eric’s world.

What to know

Lin-Manuel Miranda composes original songs that  appear alongside the originals in the live-action Disney production

The Little Mermaid is a live-action musical fantasy reimagining of the original Disney cartoon produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The original 1989 animated film was based on the much darker tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. The 2023 live-action film is directed by Rob Marshall, who also helmed Chicago (2002), Into The Woods (2014), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). The film’s screenplay was written by Jane Goldman and David Magee. Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame produced the film and worked with the film's composer, Alan Menken, to create the new original songs. However, the familiar songs from the 1989 Little Mermaid animated film are also included alongside Miranda and Menken’s new material. Moving Picture company brings Atlantica to life with special effects for The Little Mermaid.

American singer and actor Halle Bailey plays Ariel in her first leading role in a feature film. The dashing Prince Eric is played by Jonah Hauer-King, and Javier Bardem plays Ariel’s father, King Triton. Melissa McCarthy plays the scheming Ursula, and Daveed Diggs dons a pair of claws to play Ariel’s crustacean friend Sebastian. The full cast is rounded out by Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Jude Akuwudike, and Lorena Andrea.
