Paddington in Peru (2024)

Saying bad things about Paddington is akin to murder in the UK (as it should be). It pains me then to say that this Peru sequel isn't quite up there with the first two movies, but that's ok. Even when Paddington's not at his best, any film with his face in it is still superior to 99% of all other films released that year. Ben Whishaw's plucky voice acting is worth the price of admission alone. Plus Paddington in Peru also stars Olivia Colman as a deliriously mad nun who cheerily sings her way through South America with a great deal of gumption and life doesn't really get much better than that.

Admittedly, Paddington in Peru doesn't quite match up to its predecessors, but that's a mighty high bar. And, without Sally Hawkins, it would always be a tough task. But, what this movie does have in abundance is that sense of adventure and whimsy that makes this trilogy one of the very best in recent years, and probably the best family movie trilogy ever. You can take the Brown family out of London, but you can't take that quintessentially British charm out of the Brown family. It's just as silly as you'd expect, with Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas fully understanding the assignment.
