The Monkey King is an animated family comedy film produced by Pearl Studio for a Netflix distribution. Pearl Studio is the Chinese animation studio behind Abominable and Kung Fu Panda 3. The film is based on the Chinese tale ‘Journey to the West’. Renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Steph Chow produces The Monkey King, and animator, storyboard artist, and screenwriter Anthony Stacchi directs. The film is penned by writing duo Ron Friedman and Steve Bencich, the minds behind Chicken Little and Open Season.
The cast is led by actor, writer, and stand-up comedian Jimmy O Yang as the titular Monkey King. He is joined by Stephanie Tsu (Everything, Everywhere, All at Once), BD Wong (Mr Robot), Bowen Yang, Jo Koy, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Ron Tuan, and Hoon Lee.
