Synopsis

Avatar Aang's quest to restore balance and defeat Fire Nation's aggression in a world of elemental powers

In a post-war world, certain individuals possess the ability to manipulate one of the four primary elements, namely air, water, earth, or fire. Aang, the last surviving Airbender, is the "Avatar" and acts as a bridge between the physical and spirit worlds. He is the only one who can control all four elements and his responsibility is to maintain balance and harmony in the world by promoting peace. Aang's mission is to stop the militaristic Fire Nation from taking over the world. Accompanied by his new friends Katara and Sokka, Aang embarks on a journey to master the elements while being pursued by Zuko, the exiled prince of the Fire Nation, who wants to capture Aang to regain his lost honour.

What to know

Netflix produces live-action TV series based on beloved animated show

Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 is the upcoming season for Netflix's action-fantasy TV series developed by Albert Kim. It is the live-action TV adaptation of the revered Nickelodeon animated series of the same name created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. While the original creators were supposed to oversee the live-action version, they ultimately left the project due to creative disagreements. As a result, Albert Kim took over as showrunner, who has previously worked on TV shows like Sleepy Hollow and Nikita.

The live-action series adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender comprises of eight episodes, each lasting for an hour and costing over $15 million per episode. The first two episodes are directed by Michael Goi, who has previously directed Megan Is Missing and episodes of American Horror Story.  Goi is also one of the executive producers of the series, along with Kim, Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, and Roseanne Liang. Given the negative response to the previous live-action film adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender directed by M. Night Shyamalan, it is understandable that there is some apprehension surrounding the Netflix series.

The primary cast of the Netflix series includes Gordon Cormier as Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe who believes in Team Avatar's ability to restore peace, and Ian Ousley as Sokka, Katara's older brother who lacks bending abilities but is resourceful and clever. Dallas Liu portrays Prince Zuko, who is under pressure to capture Aang for his father, the Fire Lord, while Daniel Dae Kim plays Fire Lord Ozai, Zuko's oppressive father. Ken Leung plays Commander Zhao, a disgraced naval officer of the Fire Nation and Zuko's primary rival. Notably, Kim has previously lent his voice to the Avatar franchise, playing General Fong in Book 2 of The Last Airbender and Hiroshi Sato in The Legend of Korra.

In addition to the main cast, the show features a talented supporting cast that includes Maria Zhang as Suki, Paul Sun-Hyung as Uncle Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Momona Tamada as Ty Lee, Thalia Tran as Mei, Lim Kay Siu as Monk Gyatso, and Ken Leung as Commander Zhao. Several other notable actors also appear in the show, such as Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue, Tamlyn Tomita as Yukari, Yvonne Chapman as Avatar Kyoshi, Casey Camp-Horinek as Gran Gran, Arden Cho as June, A Martinez as Master Pakku, Nathaniel Arcand as Chief Arnook, Meegwun Fairbrother as Avatar Kuruk, Utkarsh Ambudkar as King Bumi, Danny Pudi as The Mechanist, Lucian-River Chauhan as Teo, Ruy Iskandar as Lt. Jee, Hiro Kanagawa as Fire Lord Sozin, C.S. Lee as Avatar Roku, François Chau as The Great Sage, Ryan Mah as Lt. Dang, Randall Duk Kim as Wan Shi Tong, and George Takei as Koh, the Face Stealer.
