Tiana is a sequel series to the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog which was originally directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. Set against the backdrop of 1920s New Orleans, the film follows the tale of Tiana, a diligent waitress with aspirations of opening her own restaurant. However, her life takes a turn when a kiss transforms a prince — cursed by an evil witch doctor — into a frog, leading Tiana to undergo a similar amphibian transformation. Now, as a frog, she embarks on a quest to revert to her human form before time runs out. The film went on to receive three Academy Award nominations including Best Animated Feature and two for Best Original Song. The Princess and the Frog's Tiana made history by being the first Black Disney Princess.

Joyce Sherri serves as the lead writer and director for Tiana after previously working on the Netflix miniseries Midnight Mass. Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee is an executive producer on the series alongside Stella Meghie. Meghie was initially attached as the writer and director of the series until Sherri took over the respective duties. Tiana will mark another milestone by being the first Disney Princess to have both a film and a TV series crafted by Walt Disney Animation Studios.
