Netflix adapts popular tabletop game for their streaming service from Transformers Prime producer
Magic: The Gathering is an upcoming animated fantasy TV series developed by Jeff Kline for Netflix. It is based on the tabletop role-playing game of the same name created by Richard Garfield. Netflix has collaborated with Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, to produce and distribute the series. Kline is a well-known figure in the animation industry after having worked on such titles as Transformers: Prime and Transformers: Robots in Disguise as well as the animated children’s program, My Friends Tigger & Pooh. The MCU’s Joe and Anthony Russo were initially attached to develop Magic: The Gathering as an animated series and even hinted at a possible live-action adaptation, however they ultimately parted from the project in August 2021.
The story editor and co-executive producer of Magic: The Gathering is Steve Melching, who was a member of the renowned creative team behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The animation studio for Magic: The Gathering is Snowball Studios, and the art direction is supervised by Izzy Medrano. The script is handled by writers Taneka Stotts, Dan Frey, Nicole Dubuc, and Russell Sommer.
The lead character, Gideon Jura, is voiced by Brandon Routh, who is best known for playing Superman in 2006’s Superman Returns.
