Mortal Kombat 2 (24 October 2025)
After spending nearly 20 years in development hell, the Mortal Kombat franchise was rebooted once more in 2021 with Mortal Kombat. The film marked a new beginning for the series, introducing Cole Young, a new protagonist who discovers his connection to Mortal Kombat and joins a group of fighters chosen to defend Earthrealm against Outworld, all to protect his family. Luckily for fans, the franchise is returning to the arena much sooner this time, with Mortal Kombat 2 slated for release on 24 October 2025. The highly anticipated sequel will see fan-favourite character Johnny Cage (played by Karl Urban) joining the line-up alongside Cole Young.
Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 (5 December 2025)
After the roaring success of the first film, horror production house Blumhouse Productions has confirmed a sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s. Universal and Blumhouse unveiled a chilling teaser at their CinemaCon panel, opening with Mike reading a note from his sister Abby, who says she’s going to “fix her animatronic friends.” The clip quickly descends into chaos, hinting at the terrifying mayhem to come as the mechanical monsters return to stalk their prey. The full cast has yet to be confirmed, but Josh Hutcherson is set to reprise his role as Mike Schmidt, and Piper Rubio will return as Abby Schmidt. Interestingly, Matthew Lillard, who played William Afton and appeared to die in the first film, is also set to return, though how his character fits into the sequel remains a mystery. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is set for a theatrical release on 5 December 2025. Unlike the first film, which debuted simultaneously in theaters and on streaming, the sequel will arrive on streaming platforms only after its theatrical run.
Fallout Season 2 (December 2025)
With its retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic setting and likable characters, Fallout was an instant success from the moment it crash-landed on Amazon in 2024. Without giving away too many spoilers, Season 1 ended with several major twists and set the stage for what’s to come. In Season 2, Lucy and the Ghoul leave the wastelands of Los Angeles and head toward the desert city of New Vegas, the only major town in North America that wasn’t directly hit by the nuclear blasts. Interestingly, New Vegas was also the main setting of the video game Fallout: New Vegas, which takes place just 15 years before the events of the show. That means fans can expect to see some familiar characters. The new season is expected to premiere on Amazon in December 2025.
Street Fighter (2026)
Legendary Entertainment, the American production company behind video game blockbusters such as Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Warcraft, and 2025’s biggest breakout film, A Minecraft Movie, is bringing the iconic Street Fighter franchise back into the ring with a new live-action film currently in the works. Japanese filmmaker Kitao Sakurai, best known for directing the 2021 Netflix comedy Bad Trip and the opening and closing episodes of Season 1 of the video game series Twisted Metal, has been brought in to helm the adaptation. This comes after the film’s original directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, exited the project, casting uncertainty over its future. Now back on track, the film is moving forward with Capcom and Legendary Entertainment working closely together to bring the beloved fighting franchise to life, with casting currently underway.
Super Mario World (3 April 2026)
In the year of Barbenheimer, a red-capped Italian plumber and his brother emerged as billion-dollar box office stars. Earning $1.36 billion globally, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became the highest-grossing animated film of 2023, surpassing Frozen II’s record for the biggest global debut for an animated film and overtaking Minions as the highest-grossing film produced by Illumination. The film featured references to various successful Mario games over the years, making it one of the most well-received video game adaptations by fans. It helped solidify the mainstream success of video game movies and raised the bar for future adaptations. Given the explosive success of the first film, Nintendo officially announced a sequel, Super Mario World, on 10 March 2024, also known as Mario Day. The sequel is slated for release in 2026. While details about the plot remain tightly under wraps, fans can expect plenty of new characters to make their debut.
The Angry Birds Movie 3 (29 January 2027)
Video games and movies share a symbiotic relationship, and this is especially true for the Angry Birds franchise. Angry Birds is arguably one of the most popular mobile games of its time. Finnish game company Rovio took the simple concept of a flock of angry birds using a slingshot to attack a group of mischievous pigs and turned it into a global phenomenon. While the initial game is what gave the franchise its viral success, the films and TV shows that followed it are what breathed new life into the franchise, giving each character its own unique storyline, depth, and personality. The Angry Birds Movie and The Angry Birds Movie 2 combined have grossed over $500 million at the box office. This smash-box success, followed by the popularity of the TV series, have led to the announcement of a threequel, The Angry Birds Movie 3, which is slated to release in 2027.
The Legend of Zelda (26 March, 2027)
Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Nintendo announced a live-action adaptation of one of its longest-running and most beloved game franchises, The Legend of Zelda, in November 2023. The news came as a welcome surprise to longtime fans who have waited years to see the series’ rich lore, picturesque landscapes, and iconic characters brought to life on the silver screen. Nintendo has partnered with Sony Pictures to produce the film, with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and The Maze Runner director Wes Ball confirmed to helm the project. While details of the plot and which specific game’s storyline will be adapted remain under wraps, The Legend of Zelda is currently slated for release on 26 March 2027.
The Sims (TBA)
Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time The Sims IP has been optioned for a film. Back in 2007, director Brian Lynch pitched an idea to 20th Century Fox for a movie about a gamer who begins experiencing everything their in-game character goes through in real life. Although the film was officially announced, it spent years in development hell and was eventually cancelled following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. After the billion-dollar success of Barbie back in 2023, actor and producer Margot Robbie set her sights on bringing a live-action adaptation of The Sims to the screen, reviving the hopes of millions of millennials who’ve spent hours building virtual lives in the game’s universe. Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, is working alongside Vertigo Entertainment (co-producer of A Minecraft Movie), EA Games, and Amazon MGM Studios to bring this iconic adaptation to life. The film will be directed by Kate Herron, best known for helming the first season of Loki. Although the film has been announced, no release date has been confirmed yet.
Elden Ring (TBA)
After weeks of speculation, A24 and director Alex Garland have officially confirmed that a live-action adaptation of Elden Ring is in the works. With its vast environments and dungeons, the dark fantasy RPG provides a rich foundation for the film to draw from. Garland and A24 have a long-standing creative partnership, which includes their collaboration on Ex Machina, Men, Civil War, and most recently, the Iraq war film Warfare. George R.R. Martin, who developed the original story and lore of the game alongside director Hidetaka Miyazaki, is also involved as a producer on the upcoming project. Martin is best known for writing the bestselling A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, which served as the inspiration for HBO’s landmark television series Game of Thrones.
Stray (TBA)
Annapurna Interactive’s award-winning video game, Stray, is getting its very own feature adaptation from the same studio’s animation branch, Annapurna Animation. In Stray, you play as a lost cat navigating through a futuristic cybercity infested with robots, machines, and mutant bacteria. Away from family, the cat must unravel mysteries, form unlikely friendships, and find a way back home. With its unique feline perspective, emotional depth, and visually rich universe, the game is prime source material for a Stray movie.
